no addresses appear in merge printing / print preview

i'm brand new to labels and addresses. i've imported a file from excel and now am attempting to print to a full sheets of 30 labels ( i have 35 to print) but the address do not appear in the print preview screen. the label template is there, but it's empty. Any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong. my printer is an hp x476dw mfp

These are basic steps to print labels:
1. Place an address panel or individual address fields on a label layout.
2. Select one or several persons in the left hand panel. It can show contacts from different sources. You need to select the MS Excel option.
3. Click on the Print button in the toolbar. The Print dialog of Labels & Addresses should display the address(es) you have selected. If you selected one but need to print many copies of it, set up the "Number of labels".
4. Click Print, check if the preview in the system Print dialog is correct and finally start printing.
